Evolution of psychiatric nursing
1946: Health committee survey report recommended preparation of nursing personnel in psychiatric nursing
1948: 4 nurses from India sent to U.S for mental health specialization
1956: One year post certificate course in psychiatric nursing in NIMHANS & AllMS started
1960- Psychiatric Nursing changed into Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.
1963 - Journal of Psychiatric Nursing and Mental health Services - Published.
1963: Mysore Government started 9 month course in psychiatric nursing for the male nursing students instead of midwifery.
1964: Mudaliar committee recommended inclusion of psychiatry in the nursing curriculum
1965: INC included psychiatric nursing as a compulsory course in B.Sc Nursing. Later on, it was added as a component in GNM course
1973-Standards of psychiatric Nursing practice to improve quality of care.
1975: Psychiatric nursing as elective subject in M.Sc Nursing
1980: Psychiatric nursing course was included as an elective subject in Diploma in Nursing Education and Administration programme in RAK CON
1983: Diploma in Psychiatric nursing was started in Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi
1986: Revision of GNM syllabus includes in depth the content of psychiatric nursing. 180 hours clinical and 60 hours of theory included in BSc. Nursing programme.
