What is ethics in nursing?
Ethics in nursing are values and morals in a nurse client relationship. In simple terms it is the right and wrong in a nurse’s professional conduct.
Core principles in ethics
a Respect for the individual and his autonomy- Concept of autonomy includes freedom of choice, self determination and privacy.
a Beneficence- Beneficence means promoting the well being of the client that is “doing good.”
a Non maleficence- This means does not harm the client directly or with intent.
a Justice- The concept justice means fairness in distribution of services and resources.
a Veracity- Veracity means truthfulness. Some forms of deception, intentional lying, and partial disclosure of information.
a Fidelity- Nurses are to be loyal to their responsibilities, maintain privacy, keep promises and meet client’s reasonable expectations.
