CONDOM DRAINAGE/CONDOM
CATHERIZATION
It involves the use of an external catheter or condom
connected to a urinary drainage system for incontinent males.
The condom is a soft, pliable rubber sheath that slips
over the penis. A strap of elastic adhesive is placed around the top of the
condom to secure it.
Purposes
·
To collect urine and
control urinary incontinence
·
To permit the client
physical activity while controlling urinary incontinence
·
To prevent skin
irritation as a result of urine incontinence
Preliminary assessment
·
Identify male clients
who require control of incontinence
·
Assess client's mental
status to determine ability to cooperate with procedure Inspect penis for irritation or areas of skin
breakdown from previous incontinence
·
Measure diameter of
the penile shaft to determine appropriate catheter size
·
Determine clients
activity level and need for continuous drainage system for urine collection
Equipment's
·
Urinary drainage bag
with tubing.
·
Condom sheathe.
·
Drape (e.g. Sheet or
bath blanket)
·
Clean gloves.
·
Basin with warm water
soap. (to clean the perineum)
·
Wash cloth, towel, (to
clean the perineum)
·
Elastic tape/Velcro
strip. (to secure condom catheter)
Preparation
·
Assemble the urinary
drainage bag for attachment to the condom sheath
·
Roll the condom
outward onto itself to facilitate easier application
·
This flap is applied
around the urinary meatus to prevent the reflux of urine
·
Position the client in
either a supine or a sitting position
