l . Pioneers and their contribution to psychiatric nursing
·         1872: First training school for nurses based on nightingale's system.
·         Linda Richards: First to graduate from 1 year course, developed 12 training school in USA
·         1920: Harriet Bailey wrote first psychiatric nursing text book 'Nursing Mental disease'
·         1882: First school to prepare nurses to care for mentally ill at Mc Lean Hospital, Waverly
·         1913: John Hopkins: First to include fully developed course for Psychiatric Nursing in the curriculum
·         The content of psychiatric Nursing became the part of general nursing curriculum
·         1943: Hildegard Peplau- Interpersonal relations (skills & roles of a psychiatric Nurse) It was the first theoretical frame work developed for psychiatric nursing
·         1960: The term psychiatric nursing was changed to psychiatric mental health nursing & in 1970: psychosocial nursing
·         1973: Standards of psychiatric & mental health nursing practice were enunciated
·         1990: Integration of neurosciences to holistic bio psychosocial practice of psychiatric nursing occurred
·         1994: Revision of Standards of psychiatric & mental health nursing

The Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS)
Indian Psychiatric Society is the largest association of Indian Psychiatrists in India.
History: Berkeley Hill in 1929, founded the Indian Association for mental hygiene.
In 1935, the Indian division of the royal Medico- Psychological Association was formed due to the efforts of Dr. Banarasi Das.
In 1946, Dr. Nagendra Nath De consulted Major R. B. Davis of the Hospital for Mental disease, Kanke, Ranchi & Brigadier T. A. Munro, Advisor in Psychiatry to the Indian Army decided to revive the association.
Due to their efforts the Indian Psychiatric Society was inaugurated at Delhi on 7th January 1947.

Indian Journal of Psychiatry
It was started in 1949 as Indian Journal Of Neurology and Psychiatry, was edited by Dr. Nagendranath De.
After 6 issues publication was stopped in 1954. It was renamed as Indian Journal of Psychiatry in 1958 and Lt. Col. Bardhan, a pathologist was appointed as its editor.

Indian Society of Psychiatric Nurses (ISPN)
Indian Society of psychiatric nurses formed at NIMHANS,
Objectives:
·         Enhancing the advanced knowledge and skills in the field of Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing.
·         To provide platform for discussion and deliberation on evidence based practice.  
·         To create awareness and to translate the research findings in MH nursing practice.
The ISPN was registered under the co-operative society act in 1991 at Bangalore,under the guidence of Dr. K. Reddemma. the present president of ISPN.

In the First year only about 50 members were interested. Late Dr. H.M. Gangadharaiah was the first President of ISPN. At present, there are 1576 life members including 77 associate life members. ISPN organized conferences every year from 2002 till date.
