Phosphorus

is essential to the function of muscle and red blood cells and nervous system.

with calcium for bone and teeth structure. The normal serum phosphorus level is
2.5 to 4.5 mg/dL
HYPOPHOSPHATEMIA
Hypophosphatemia
is a below-normal serum concentration of inorganic phosphorus.
Causes
·
Malabsorption
syndrome.
·
Glucose
administration, parenteral nutrition
·
Alcohol
withdrawal, poor dietary intake, and major thermal burns.
·
Respiratory
alkalosis
Signs and symptoms
·
Irritability,
·
Fatigue,
·
Weakness,
·
Numbness
·
Paresthesia's
·
Confusion
·
Seizures
and coma.
Management
·
Oral
phosphorus replacement is usually adequate.
·
IV
phosphorus correction is usually limited to patients whose serum phosphorus
levels fall below 1 mg/dl (0.3 mmol/L) and whose GI tract is not functioning
