SPECIAL CONCIDERATION
IN ADMNISTARTION
In
order to avoid the complications and risk of medication, a nurse should follow
some rules
1.WHILE PREPARING MEDICINE
Read
the physicians order carefully before preparing the drug. No medicine should be
prepared without a written order. Verbal order is considerable in case of
emergency.

Check the medicine card against the
physician's order.
·
Concentrate the mind and avoid
conversation while preparing medication.
·
Calculate the fractions of drug
accurately.
·
Give the medicine only from a labelled
container,
·
Shake the fluid medicine well before
pouring it to the ounce glass.
·
Pour the medicine from the bottle only on
the side opposite to the label.
·
Wipe the mouth of the bottle, close it
tightly and replace it after use.
·
When taking tablets and capsules. Never
touch them with hands.
·
Once the medication is poured, never pour
it back to the same bottle.
·
Prepare the drug just before the time of
administration.
2. REGARDING
THE ADMINISTRATION
·
Observe and follow the rights of
administration.
·
Observe the symptoms of over dosage before
it is administered.
·
Identify the client carefully, by name,
identification number and identification band.
Give the drugs one by one.
·
Stay with the client until he has taken
the medicine completely.
·
Observe for any contraindication like
nausea, vomiting, giddiness etc.
·
Always give the medicine that you have
prepared.
·
Do not allow the medication glass to touch
the mouth.
·
Always provide a glass of water after oral
medication.
·
Report an error in medication immediately
to the physician or in charge nurse.
·
Do not leave the medicine with the client.
·
Never give water after the administration
of cough syrup,
·
If the client has nasogastric tube for
feeding, the nurse can powder the medicine and dissolve it in a solution and feed
the client.
·
Enteric-coated tablets should never be
chewed or crushed for ease administration.
·
The lozenges are to be suck and and not
chewed until they are completely discharged in mouth.
3. REGARDING
THE RECORDING
·
Record each dose of drug, soon after it is
administered.
·
Use standard abbreviations in recording
the medicine.
·
Record only the medicine which you have
administered.
·
Never record a medicine before its
administration.
·
Record the effects observed. Local and
systemic effect.
·
Record the medicine that have been refused
or vomited by the patients.
·
Record the medicine that you have not
given, and the reason for non-administration.
